Pomegranate finding its way into our beauty products
If you haven’t noticed that pomegranate has taken over supermarket shelves, you probably haven’t been to the supermarket. Pomegranate is everywhere, in juice drinks, supplements and beauty products. Whether you drink it, eat it or use it on your skin, pomegranate, even in small amounts, can be a powerful antioxidant, which means that it helps the body and skin protect itself from toxins in the environment.
I asked Cosmetics Cop Paula Begoun () what she thinks about pomegranate in skin-care products. “Pomegranate is a super-food antioxidant that has been proven to help prevent and repair sun damage,” she says. “It’s an excellent ingredient to look for in moisturizers, serums and sunscreens.”
Dr. David McDaniel, assistant professor of clinical dermatology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, says, “There are many benefits to natural ingredients in skin care, for example licorice root, chamomile and pomegranate. For some, there is a pigment lightening effect for improving the appearance of uneven skin using licorice root extract and pomegranate.
“Pomegranate also has a strong antioxidant protective effect and can be found in many good skin-care products,” he said.
